So today, we're learning about important little words.

In English, you say a man, a woman, a book. How do you say "a" in French? Well, you'll have to work out if it goes with a masculine or feminine word.

For example;

Un_homme = a man. As we don't pronounce the "h" in French, you link the words and actually say "un nomm".

Une femme = a woman.

Un livre = a book. Book is masculine, so you say "un livre".

Une voiture = a car. Car is feminine.

In English you say men, women, books, cars... In French, we have to say some men, some women, some books, some cars. You'll always have this little word which is "des". Here you don't have to worry about masculine or feminine; everything is "des";

Des_hommes, des femmes, des livres, des voitures.

If you want to say the man, the woman, the book or the car, it works like this;

Le livre = the book. "le" means "the" with masculine words.

La femme = the woman. "la" is with feminine words.

La voiture. Car is feminine.

Now look what happens with homme, as it starts with a vowel;

L'homme = the man. You don't pronounce the "h", so actually you say "lomm".

L'ami = the friend. It's a male friend. You know that you usually add an "e" for feminine words such as professions or nationalities. Look;

L'amie = the friend. It's a female friend. The pronounciation is the same. Obviously within the conversation you know whom you're talking about, so there's no confusion.

Observez !

Les_amis, les_hommes, les femmes, les livres, les voitures. "les" is plural and you add an "s" to your word, to show that there are more than one of them.

So;

Le = masculine words starting with a consonnant

La = feminine words starting with a consonnant

L' = word starting with a vowel

Les = plural, either masculine or feminine.
